		<description>Thanks Shelley.  It would be so hard to design a &#039;pre-test&#039; to measure this, wouldnt it? It&#039;s not really something you can collect empirical data on. Or is it? What would be some fundamental questions we could ask?</description>

I just had a flash of memory from my childhood... I lived in a very small town (~1200 people) for all of my growing up years, but had an absolutely miserable sense of the geography of the place because my mother drove me everywhere. It wasn&#039;t until I started to ride a bike and learned to read maps that I could really say that I knew where I was.

How many of our students know where they are? For that matter, do we know where we are? :-)</description>
