I just had a flash of memory from my childhood... I lived in a very small town (~1200 people) for all of my growing up years, but had an absolutely miserable sense of the geography of the place because my mother drove me everywhere. It wasn't until I started to ride a bike and learned to read maps that I could really say that I knew where I was. How many of our students know where they are?
